Do these units auto-baud and what is the baud range?
No,it is not auto-baud. You need to press a "B" button to change the baud rate. Support baud rate: 4800,9600,19200,38400,57600,115200
Does this use batteries or does it rely on a specific pin for power?
It used AAA battery for display. However, the LED will blink whenever the data come in even in no battery situation, Ie, LED get it power from RX and Ground(pin 5)..
Do they show any pin activity or are the Rx and Tx pins monitored?
Yes. any pin activity will made the LED to flash.
Does unit retain the baud rate when powered off or does it default to a specific rate? I worked on async serial terminals before there was ethernet or t1 lines. 300/1200/9600 bps was the norm.
The default buad rate setting is 9600. I never come across using 300, and 1200 for the baud rate. However, i will consider to add it.
What is the function of Tx button?
When you press "Tx", it will send a text "Hello World". It is used to test a com port receive function.
